SCLEROTHERAPY
Sclerotherapy is a procedure used for the treatment of unsightly dilated blood vessels which may appear as unsightly red, blue or purple areas on the skin. These may variously be known as Spider Veins, Thread Veins, Telangiectasia or Red Veins. Some of these terms are interchangeable. The larger varicose veins would require a surgical opinion from a vascular surgeon. The causes and nature of these blood vessels varies depending on there situation and the treatment differs correspondingly.
The exact cause of this condition is unknown but they can be related to certain medical conditions and are more common in some families .Trauma can also be a factor . There is also an hormonal association particularly with oestrogen. Some types of tight clothing may also be a factor.
Can Other Methods Prevent Their Formation ?
Specific types of compression hosiery can help prevent worsening of leg veins as can the avoidance of high heel shoes which prevent efficient venous drainage of the legs.
What Does Treatment Involve ?
In the case of leg veins a specialised solution call a sclerosant is injected into the veins using a very fine needle in procedure called Sclerotherapy. This causes inflammation and irritation of the lining of the vein with fibrosis resulting in the vein contracting and usually disappearing or reducing in size. Dressings to the treated areas and compression bandaging to the treated area will be required post treatment.
How Many Sessions Will Be Required ?
Usually repeat sessions at approximately 12 weekly intervals will be required which can be up to four sessions but this varies from one to many more and depends on the individual.
What Side Effects Can Occur ?
Even with experienced doctors bruising, scarring and discolouration can occur. Infections can occur and rarely small ulcers may occur.
What Do I Need To Do After The Procedure ?
You will need to wear compression hosiery after the procedure for a period .Walking will be encouraged as this will encourage emptying of the veins.
